Doctor Who World Tour - New York City, August 14th, 2014 - Spoiler Free

AHHHH! So this week I became part of Doctor Who history, witnessing the global ushering of the Twelfth Doctor. I had no idea I was going until this week, and I didn’t request the proper time off… so I just mentioned to my office that I was going to see the Doctor for an appointment. I don’t see it as a lie either.

I arrived four hours before doors opened and of course, the most die hard fans were already there before me. Sixes, Fours, Tens and Elevens filled the sidewalk to the the Bow Tie Theatre, a sight I only recognized from past conventions.

Upon exchanging glances with a weeping angel cosplayer and taking a photo with a girl in a dalek fez, I remembered why I loved going to these type of events. Every interaction was an inside joke that everyone was in on, every conversation had felt like talking to an old friend. The fact that we all shared this great and weird interest was never ceased to fascinate me, and even among the most unfamiliar strangers, I felt at home. Everyone had their story on how a 2000 year old fictional alien changed their lives and influenced them to lead life as the Doctor leads his, with compassionate, curiosity and a little crazy.

The event itself was spectacular. The organizers wasted no time, as soon as everyone was seat and the screwdrivers were muted, Deep Breath came onto the screen in front of us.  The sense of camaraderie in the audience was something i’d never forget: for an hour, we all laughed, cried and cheered together as we welcomed Doctor 12 into the fandom. The episode itself left me speechless, I could honestly watch it a dozen more times, and I just might have to in wait for the second episode.

The credits rolled, the house lights illuminated the hall, revealing the Doctor, Peter Capaldi himself, complete with companion, Jenna, and showrunner, Moffat. I very rarely get starstruck, but the sight of the three of them right after seeing the most amazing episode of Doctor Who in recent years, my brain was exploding. I could barely handle the fact I was in the same room as them, let alone breathing the same air as them. The big three greeted the crowd with enthusiasm and answered our questions as we all looked on in awe.

My passion for Doctor Who has grown ten-fold and I am beyond restless to see where the Doctor will take us next. Geronimo!
